The transformation of plaintext into ciphertext using an algorithm and a key. “At rest” protects stored data; “in transit” protects data crossing a network; “end-to-end” means only the communicating parties hold the keys. Strong encryption is a safe-harbor reducer or eliminator in many U.S. breach laws.
